He is the son of Egydio de Sá Cavalcanti, a small business owner, and Nativa da Costa Holanda. On 20 October 1951 he married Stella Teixeira, philosopher, with whom he had one daughter and two sons. After their separation in 1964, he married Dirce de Assis, sculptor and writer, on 17 February 1965.  She brought two daughters and one son.
