Description

Swedish civil servant and second Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) 1953-1961 Was born 29 July 1905 in Jönköping, Sweden and died 18 September 1961 near Ndola, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). He was the son of Knut Hjalmar Leonard Hammarskjöld, lawyer and politician, and Agnes Almqvist. Entry in IO BIO, Biographical Dictionary of Secretaries-General of International Organizations.
